What is NRC:
NRC(National Register of Citizens) is a register containing the list of all Indian citizens whose creation is mandated by the 2003 amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1951.
NRC(National Register of Citizens) first apply for the citizens of Assam during 2013-14.
Short History of NRC in Assam:
Assam had data about its citizens in India according to the census data 1951. After a few years, this data was stopped being updated due to the announcement of the Illegal Migrants act,1983.
After all those years, the Supreme court of India felt a need to update the NRC data of Assam. As a result, the Illegal Migrants Act made unconstitutional in 2005.
Impact of NRC over Assam:
Though the Supreme court of India felt the need of updating NRC data in 2005, the process took almost a decade and the final decision of updating data was to take place in around 2013. The final NRC data updated for Assam published on 31 August 2019.
The data contained only 31 million names out of its 33 million population. The remaining 1.9 million people were eventually become homeless or say stateless.
