The idea behind the making of the service, IPS(Indian Police Service), is to provide a leader to different forces like state police forces, central armed police forces and union territories.
History of IPS:
when the British government introduced the Indian Council Act in 1861, the foundation of police bureaucracy was established in India. A new body of police was introduced, called Superior Police Services.
Later, the name was changed to the Indian Imperial Police. This name continued till 1948. After independence, one year later, the name was changed to IPS(Indian Police Service).
